Hunting for photography in the KC area can be daunting.  There are so many photographers out there.  Kansas City is a great place for families and artist, so it's natural we would have a good supply of family photographers.  When you are looking into photographers and narrow it down to your top 2 or 3, here are some great questions you can ask to help you find the right photographer for your needs.

One of the first things you might inquire about is how long has this photographer been doing photography?  While newer photographers can be great there is a lot to be said with one who has experience on their side.  A seasoned photographer will likely know how to do the following ...

pose all different body types

make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera

shoot for the best lighting

remove or eliminate glass glare on glasses

guide subjects into a well thought out pose

make sure you feel and look your best

Question Number TWO could be as simple as asking a Kansas City Photographer what a session is like with them.  While you can call or email this question directly to the photographer, my best suggestion would be to look into their google reviews.  Other Kansas Citians who have already experienced a session with this photographer would be your best bet on a honest answer of what to expect from in terms of how a session flows and how good or bad an experience with their company can be.

Question Number THREE . . . ask your photographer what is included in the package and if there are any hidden fees.  Some photographers charge for a sitting fee and then after the photo session you decide what you'd like to purchase, while other photographers include certain items up front.  Some photographers include retouching and some only include editing.  What would be the difference?  Well editing is making sure the images are centered and the correct color.  While retouching can include removing of blemishes, removing distractions from the background, head swaps so everyone has their best smile and eyes open, slimming, softening dark circles under the eyes and so much more.

Question Number FOUR . . . If you have a time line for when you are hoping or needing to get your images back from your portrait session, it is important to ask the photographer what their turn around time is.  For example if you are doing an engagement session and will be waiting on your pictures to add to your "Save the Date" it would be good to make sure you have plenty of time and are not rushed, frustrated or rushing your photographer.  It's great to keep communication open so everyone is on the same page.

And my Final Suggestion on what to ask your potential photographer would be . . . "What do you photograph?"  Some photographers specialize in weddings, newborns, babies, families, branding or even real estate.  While others have enough experience to tackle it all.  You can review their work online in most cases and see how they stack up in the area of photography you are interested in.

Once you find a photographer near you and think you ready to hire them, take a second and be sure you've done your research.  There are so many great professionals I'm sure you can find a photographer that fits your needs and style!  Good luck and happy hunting!
