Every couple brings a different energy to their session. Willow and Ari’s shoot was full of creativity and laughter as we worked around one downtown Kansas City location, Take Care by Oleo Coffee, using different backdrops and angles to create a full, dynamic gallery.
Coffee shops can be a great way to ease into a session because sitting down with drinks gives couples something natural to do with their hands while we warm up.
One of the biggest reasons couples love sessions in Kansas City is the variety of backgrounds within a small area. Downtown offers:
Historic brick architecture
Colorful murals and textured walls
Quiet side streets perfect for portraits
Modern city backdrops that feel stylish and timeless
As we walked around the area, Willow and Ari leaned into the fun side of the session. Some moments were playful, some were a little more posed, and some were simply about enjoying the experience together.
That mix of direction and spontaneity helped us create a gallery with a lot of variety and personality.
One of the things I loved most about this session was getting to photograph Willow and Ari because of how our paths crossed. I actually met them through my best friend Melanie, and they all attend All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church together. It’s always special when a session starts with a real-life connection like that. Willow and Ari live in a loft downtown, which feels very fitting for them and their creative lives in the city. Ari is an architect, and Willow is an engineer who also happens to be an incredible baker. I loved hearing about their work and their life together—it’s one of those relationships that just feels thoughtful, supportive, and full of respect for each other’s passions. Spending time with them makes it easy to see why they work so well as a couple.
